Install IXEL Mesh

The IXEL Mesh app for your Mac, PC or Linux desktop, and the ixel-mesh command for servers.

Get every download from the downloads page. Each one is listed with its SHA-256 checksum.

Mac

Requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later, on Apple silicon or Intel.

  1. Download IXEL Mesh for Mac and open the downloaded .dmg.
  2. In the window that opens, drag IXEL Mesh onto Applications. Then open it from your Applications folder, and eject the disk image.
  3. IXEL Mesh lives in the menu bar. Click its icon and choose Sign in.

This beta isn’t notarised by Apple yet, so the first time you open it macOS says it can’t check it. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down and click Open Anyway next to IXEL Mesh. You only need to do this once.

To open IXEL Mesh automatically, turn on Open IXEL Mesh when you log in in its Settings.

Windows

Requires Windows 10 version 1809 or later, on x64 or Arm.

  1. Download IXEL Mesh for Windows (or the Arm build for Windows on Arm) and extract the zip to a folder you keep, such as your user folder.
  2. Open IXEL Mesh.exe. The first time, it opens its window; after that it lives in the notification area by the clock.
  3. Choose Sign in.

This beta isn’t code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen may warn you the first time. Choose More info → Run anyway.

If you can’t see the icon, click the arrow by the clock to show hidden icons, and drag IXEL Mesh onto the taskbar.

Linux

The desktop app needs GTK 4, libadwaita and PyGObject:

Then download IXEL Mesh for Linux, extract it and run the installer. It installs for your user only, adds IXEL Mesh to your applications menu and puts the ixel-mesh command in ~/.local/bin:

The tray icon works on KDE Plasma, Xfce, Cinnamon and Budgie, and on GNOME with the AppIndicator extension. Without a tray, IXEL Mesh runs while its window is open.

Servers and terminals

On a server, or anywhere you prefer a terminal, install just the ixel-mesh command. It checks the download’s checksum and needs no administrator rights.

Then run ixel-mesh up. See Command line and servers.

Uninstall

  1. In IXEL Mesh, choose Sign out and remove this device, or remove it in the Dashboard.
  2. Quit IXEL Mesh and delete the app: drag it to the Bin on a Mac, delete its folder on Windows, or delete ~/.local/share/ixel-mesh on Linux.
  3. To remove the device’s key as well, delete its settings folder: ~/Library/Application Support/ixel-mesh on a Mac, %AppData%\ixel-mesh on Windows, ~/.config/ixel-mesh on Linux.
